I want to get into finance, but I want to leave my options open. I understand that at UF the accounting program is top-notch and the finance program is good, but not great. Mostly I want to know your opinions on the matter.

There's a common answer of "If you like finance, major in it." I understand this concept, but in complete and utter truth, what do you really think? From your experience, would an accounting major at all be better than a finance major? Obviously there's overlap, but differences between the two make it questionable as to which on average would have a better quality of life.

Is it really true that an accounting major can do a finance job but not vis-versa?

I am hoping some alumni or current students could answer.

Im a business minor, so Ill answer to the best of my abilities with my limited scope of these majors:

first off, congrats on liking accounting and finance, because if you honestly dont like these subjects you WILL be miserable. Fin Accounting was SO boring to me. (Im a liberal arts major and pre-health so I like science classes and the such.)

Youre right, accounting is top notch here. Most grads go on to some GREAT jobs. Then again, Im currently taking business finance and we just had an email sent over the listserve from a student who graduated in finance last year who now works for Wells Fargo and is offering an internship opportunity.

Then again, my management prof graduated from UF with a finance degree and ended up getting a PhD in management. So its more of an individual drive sort of thing…

If youre on campus, talk to the profs! They seem approachable enough (especially the finance profs…the accounting prof- not sure about the new one- seemed standoffish).

well, after my friends and I took accounting, the ones who took Business Finance afterwards said it was MUCH easier. (especially if you go to tutoringzone).

You need a 3.2 do graduate cum laude in accounting and 3.5 to graduate cum laude in business administration (including finance). So that could be an indicator of a more rigorous curriculum.

Again, pick what you think you’ll excel at.
