Accounting vs. Finance vs. Econ Major?

Hello everyone, first I want to say great site.

I am a Freshman and I am currently undeclared in my major. I am debating between these three majors: Accounting, Finance, and Economics.

Ok, here I will list my pros and cons in my opinion to each major, and please feel free to correct me.

Accounting:
Pros:
-Very good job field
-Pretty good pay
-Statistics is about the only math I like
-Able to do a double major with Finance

Cons:
-Heard it was very difficult
-Stressful during deadline times and crazy work hours
-CPA exam is pretty hard
-Pretty competitive to get into good firms

Finance:
Pros:
-More interesting to me than Accounting
-Greater earning potential than accounting
-Double major with Accounting

Cons:
-Broad major: Not guaranteed a job straight out of college like with Accounting

Economics:
Pros:
-Good pay if decide to continue my education
-Pretty interesting to me

Cons:
-Very broad major
-Difficult to some people
Don't know much about Economics.

So what do you guys recommend on these?

Double major in Accounting/Finance? Accounting or Econ major with minor in Finance?

I plan on pursuing my masters in each of these degrees, as well as taking the CPA exam if I major in Accounting.

Or do you guys just recommend me to take some accounting/Finance classes to see what I like the most? Thanks for your input in advance.

“Or do you guys just recommend me to take some accounting/Finance classes to see what I like the most? Thanks for your input in advance.”

Yes. You might not like some things in these majors. A friend of mine started in Accounting, took an Intermediate course, didn’t like spending too much time on it, and changed his concentration. From the economic standpoint, it’s better to do what you like and what you are best at; not what earns you most money.

Just so you know, high finance jobs that are typically associated with big pay days, like Hedge Funds, Private Equity, Venture Capital, and starting out, Investment Banking, arent jobs that you can get coming out of a non-target school. In fact, a good chunk of the schools that are targets for IB (which leads to jobs in HF and PE and what not) don’t even have finance as a major.

If you’re at a non-target and major in finance, the best you can reasonably expect is a job as a financial analyst. Not to say this is a bad gig, but its not the type of finance job you’re thinking of. You’ll have to climb up the corporate ladder like anyone else. IMO, post-Big 4 career prospects are better than having just started off as a financial analyst outta school.

My responses in asterisks.

-Stressful during deadline times and crazy work hours Can be stressful, depending on person
-CPA exam is pretty hard Easy, passed first try 1 1/2 months, CFA is x100 harder
