Accounting vs Finance

This past spring I graduated from a state school in florida cum laude with bachelors in Finance. I have been working at a bank for about 6 months now and feel like my position is pretty much a dead end. I have been considering going back to school to either get a masters in accounting and sit for the CPA or doing a MBA and substituting electives for accounting courses to satisfy the requirements to sit for the CPA.

Can someone please give me some advice which direction they feel is more beneficial. I feel with just a Finance degree jobs are limited and the pay is quite low.

Why do you want to become a CPA?

^^uh, probably because it opens more doors for him/her?? Most respectable MBA programs require a little more work experience (like 2-4 yrs minimum). If you can wait a couple more years, then you should get the MBA, because it has a lot more worth than a Macc. If you want to go ahead to grad school and become CPA eligible in a year, then go for the Macc. So really it depends on how long you want to stay at your job before going back to school. Personally, I would wait for the MBA, not only because of the value, but who knows, you could reach a breakthrough at your current job in the next couple years

thanks futurevpfinance. I just wanted to go ahead and get it over with. I was planning on sticking with my job and attending school. And yes that CPA does open so many more doors and I’m seeing all my peers that studied accounting are landing more promising careers. Im only 23 and feel if I dont do it now, I probably won’t.

DG. Most good business schools are have addressed the masters in accounting and MBA issues. The better schools have concentration in accounting MBA that will get you to the test. Doing the programs on the weekend will network you with other professionals and expand your career opportunities. Who knows the MBA CPA might get you moving up the ladder at the bank. Right now, CPA firms are short on auditors with banking experience.

^^^^^agree

I think Tosh’s question was why do you want to take the career path of a CPA, aka an accountant, instead of some other career path such as financial advising, investments, operations, supply chain, quantwork, etc…, especially considering your undergrad degree is in finance and not accounting.
