Hello everyone! I just joined CC not to long ago but have read most of the threads posted. I'm not sure if this was ever mentioned but I could use some advice!

I am currently a freshman majoring in accounting. I am taking the basic accounting courses as of now and I love accounting thus far. I am more of a math rather than a writing guy and I can see myself as an accountant down the road without regret like many people who are in the field. I love the thought of having a stable job and am confident that I can do well in the field.
However, I love being creative. Marketing and advertising is something that I have always wanted to do. To be honest, I would rather do marketing than accounting. I am more confident in accounting but I know that I will enjoy marketing more. Most people on this forum are all about accounting and I have seen some people shoot down Marketing.
At the moment I'm debating whether or not I should choose between the two or thinking about double majoring. Would it be a waste of time to double major in these two fields?

I would appreciate any advice! Thanks in advance!

Combination makes no sense. Pick one or the other.

Marketing is shot down because it tries to teach you creativity which can’t be taught. It gives you no applicable skills. Every marketing major I know ended up in sales. The people who ended up in advertising were journalism majors, psychology majors, etc.

Without marketing (sales), the accounting guys would have nothing to add up!

Salesmen are the engine that drives a company. However, it takes a certain personality to be in sales (usually type A people that don’t mind rejection and have a “whatever it takes” attitude). Many sales jobs are largely commission based. If you need a steady paycheck, it might not be the best avenue to approach. If money is one of your ultimate goals, sales is probably a good avenue to pursue.

Accounting is always in demand because of the need for every business to use accounting services. From simple book keeping to payroll to report filing to budgeting to accounts payable/receivable to taxation to anything else related to money (and everything usually is). Accountants are very versatile, that’s why it’s a strong degree.

thanks for the replies.
@workingatbig4: so are u suggesting that if I wanted to go into advertising, I shouldn’t major in marketing? and also, is writing skills something that I need to be strong at in order to go into advertising?
