UVa;s Mcintire sent 55 kids to Big Four Accounting firms last year.

MOST Ivies don't even offer accounting classes.

55 isnt really anything to be proud of. Cal poly san luis obispo sent almost 50 last year with near 60 if you include some of the larger west coast firms.

Unlike i-banking/consulting, recruitment into accounting is not very dependent on the overall prestige of the graduating school. As long as you attend a good state college (the top 100 tier one schools fall under this category), you'll be fine. Recruitment is mostly subject to grades. Do well at a good school, work hard, get good grades and you'll most likely end up working for the big four.

You should also mention that you need to be willing to work long hours--and if you are serious about going very far, you need to be willing to do all this while still studying for and passing the Uniform CPA examination.

Most Big 4 firms are all about body count and billable hours--half of the people they hire don't make it through the first 2 years. Having said this--they are the way to go if you are an accountant, since the prestige factor is tremendous, the training is top notch, and if you don't get burnt out you will learn accounting by seeing it in action at lots of different companies.

I should point out that in addition to skill in accounting, being able to project a confident self-image and communication skills are critical in these jobs--and is the #1 thing they look for during the interview process.

With big 4 recruiting, if you go to a school that gets recruiting, are you more or less stuck to the office close by? Or are you able to work in a differnet office?

For example if I went to ASU/U of A would I be stuck in Phoenix? Or would they consider leting me work in LA or NYC?

You are definitely not stuck with your local office.

mainly local offices

If you want to work at a different office than your local, you usually go for a first round interview with the local. If you're good enough for them to hire you, then they will recommend you to the other office. Depending on the relationship between the two offices, you may or may not have to go for a second round interview with the other office. I know people (in Boston) who have gone on to interview with offices in New York, Portland and California. It may be harder to get into certain offices depending on your location/university and the demand of your desired office, but you are NOT limited to your local office at all.

Something's wrong. Wharton's #3 on that list. Just kidding. That sounds about right...although UT or some other state school (I don't remember) claims to be #1 in accounting.
