Accredited engineering program vs. BS in Applied Science and Engineering?

DS has six colleges remaining on his list and recently is swaying towards engineering major as opposed to humanities. When we looked for schools, it was really more with an eye to top psych programs. So, we have 5 schools that have strong engineering schools and then one, that only offers "BS Applied Science and Engineering" degree and is "not accredited engineering program by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET)."

My question - would that make you drop that school out of contention? What effect does that have on jobs/outcomes?

Most folks would say attend a ABET school to “cover all bases” because there could be some employers and grad schools that care about your BS degree being accredited. Some graduate engineering schools like Michigan & Purdue will not allow non-ABET undergrads to have M.S. Engineering on their degree…only MS (undesignated)…if they completed the grad school requirements.

Having said all of that, remember that computer science is NOT part of the engineering school at many colleges. Also keep in mind that the ABET does NOT give accreditation for Masters degrees (except for 2 schools). Therefore, you could end up with someone like myself who was a Math major as an undergrad (that’s non-ABET because it is not engineering) and go on to get a M.S. in Engineering (remember master degrees are not accredited by ABET) and still have a long engineering career.

It will boil down to how you perform at interviews and your past work experience.
