Why is there a waitlist to get in? I'm missing a whole course unit and intend to fill it with acct 101 (and have all the prereqs), but am in SEAS...is that the problem? What the hell happened to 'One University'? They told me I have to wait until everything starts and talk to a professor with an open spot (and if there isn't one, then I'm screwed). BS...

Well acct 101 is a requirement for Wharton students. I’m sure there are certain classes that majors have preference in signing up, and acct 101 is kind of like part of the “major.” So it makes sense that it’s full.
Why the hell do you even want to take accounting anyway? The majority of people I know hate the class (ok I’m going to have to take it but whatever)

ACCT 101 is not allowed to be taken by freshman in any other division except Wharton. There are very, very, VERY few exceptions.

The same goes for ACCT 102, OPIM 101, MGMT 101, FNCE 100, ECON 10, MGMT 100 and there maybe more intro courses that I can’t remember. MGMT 100 and ECON 10 is not allowed to be taken by anyone except Wharton students. Last year, however, a computer mistake allowed a few students not in Wharton to take ECON 10. This has been fixed.

The “one university” thing applies in the sense that you are not forbidden from dual degrees, entering buildings, participating in extracurricular activities, and such. I mean, think about it. How many SEAS students get credit/are allowed to take nursing classes or archeology courses? I don’t know about nursing, but archeology has a permission requirement that will stop any non CAS student from taking it.

To my knowledge, very few permissions are granted by Wharton to SEAS students taking non-intro Wharton courses. The only exception to this is being a systems engineer attempting to concentrate in financial engineering.

looks open when i log in…

why ya wanna take it freshman year anyways? ur gonna forget everything by the time u actually use it (if u even do), unless u take upper level ones

I took accounting 101 last fall as a SAS student. One university policy is fine. It’s a ***** of a class to take first semester freshman year though. Armstrong is cool, but boring as hell.

I know accounting is boring as hell (my mom does it for a living…). I want to take it b/c it’s a prereq that opens up a lot of other Wharton courses that I might actually be interested in (e.g. FNCE 100). Lauke, what you said is a bit confusing as I was under the impression that only MGMT was restricted to non-Wharton students and every other course was available to all students across the university. I could care less about Econ 010 as I already have credit for 001 and 002. I’m actually glad I even have the opportunity to take a course like ACCT 100 first semester thanks to AP credit. I’d rather get such intro courses that are prereqs for other courses out of the way early. But this whole mess makes Wharton seem much more restricted than I thought it was. Now it seems like I’ll have to waste 1 CU with some BS filler course. Oh and for reference, I do intend to try to transfer into Wharton-SEAS dual degree after freshman year (yes, I know it’s hard), which is why I don’t want a single CU to not satisfy some prereq, major requirement, or what not.

If you’re not looking for a degree, I think you can get a lot of the prereq’s waived.

^Edited my post, am looking to try for dual degree…but that’s good to know in case that doesn’t work out.

^courses like finance, accounting, and others are locked from all first semester freshmen. They are generally taken sophomore and junior year by Wharton students. If they are restricted from Wharton freshmen you’re not getting in as a SEAS freshman. If you want the dual degree look for the best grades possible. Accounting isn’t necessarily the course to take when trying to get a 3.8 average.

How is accounting difficult? Could you be a little more specific? I already know it’s going to be insanely hard to get the 3.8…my schedule includes MATH 114 and PHYS 150. Could you also explain why intro courses are locked for freshman? The average Wharton student probably has enough AP credit to take many of those courses, so why the hell would Penn have such a BS system? Hmm, it’s almost like they’re trying to keep us there as long as possible…I wonder why sarcasm. You know what would be really funny is if they discreetly screened applicants for permits so that they only went out to those getting huge financial aid. I wouldn’t put it past them.

You’re not gonna see any freshmen in accounting 101.

the thing about most wharton courses (esp. compared to seas ones) is that the material isn’t necessarily what makes it hard…rather, it’s the competition with other students that makes getting a good grade difficult. having taken several classes full of upperclassmen when i was a freshman (first sem i had math 240 and lgst 210 for example), i can tell u it’s a good idea to just stick with what’s on the beaten path for your grade level.

Can someone recommend a good course I can take instead of acct 101 that isn’t filler BS? I’m taking Math 114, Phys 150, CIS 120, Writ, and need a fifth course to round it out. Again, for reference, I intend to at least take some upper-level Wharton courses and possibly even dual-degree.

yeah definitely don’t take acct 101 first semester freshman year

take something interesting! you won’t really get electives if you get into dual degree

I took MKTG 101 as a first semester SAS freshman with no intent to transfer/dual. It’s extremely easy, interesting, and fills a requirement if you go on to do the dual degree.
