Accutane versus Vocal Chords?

I started taking Accutane March 30 I have take 4 pills of it. I feel my face definitely dry and I had a nosebleed which I suppose it’s because of the drug. I’m a singer and right now my voice is hoarse I think because of some overuse of my vocal cords last week but I’ve noticed that my voice even when I’m resting and barely talking when I do a note or sing something just to see how my voice is doing it sounds hoarse. Usually when I get hoarse with 3 days of resting I get my voice back. I’m worried that because of accutane I’ll not get back my voice. what should I do?

JeRob5, if you are a professional singer or studying voice in college or are a junior/senior in HS expecting to audition soon, you may want to look for other avenues to treat acne. Since Accutane dehydrates your mucous membranes, you are risking loss of notes, even if temporary. If your throat and vocal chords are strained due to this dehydrated state, you could cause other damage. I’m not sure how long it takes to form a polyp on your vocal chord, but dehydration and overuse are strong contributors to voice injury. If you decide to stay on, you may want to evaluate your water drinking to maximize your hydration. Good luck …

My daughter started taking Accutane (Amnesteem - Isotretinoin capsules USP) in August of 2011 as she was entering her senior year of high school. She experienced loss of range within the second month of taking the drug. She talked to her dermatologist about it and was told to drink more water - which she did, but that didn’t seem to help. She panicked as she had college auditions approaching and worked with her voice teacher to ‘tweak’ her audition material. Around November, a music teacher at school had alerted my daughter to the dangers of accutane on vocal chords. My daughter was still experiencing loss or range and hoarseness so she stopped taking the drug at the end of November. Fast forward a number a months and here is where we are today - 2 days ago a reputable otolaryngologist found a polyp on her vocal chord. We cannot say that there is direct link between the accutane and the polyp - BUT if you choose to take accutane, consider vocal rest during the entire time you are on the drug. It does dry out your chords - and forcing notes and ‘singing through’ can contribute to polyp.

Just to offer another drug option. My daughter takes Solodyn. It works wonders on her acne but does not have the heavy side affects of Accutane. You might want to ask your doctor if this medication is an option.
