ACES to Engineering Department question.

So I applied to the engineering school for my first choice and the ACES program for my second choice (didn't apply to business school second choice or I would have probably been wait-listed from the whole school), and ended up getting into ACES, which stinks.

To anyone who can answer this:

How hard is it to get into the engineering school? Can you apply every semester? Do they look at your highschool grades when you apply from ACES to the engineering department?

My SAT score is fine: 2100, but my grades are sub-par, which led to the denial to the engineering department. My parents were pretty mad, so I need some information on the process of getting into the engineering school from ACES. I already am 110% sure that I want to major in electrical engineering, and even picked the classes out already using the electrical department's handbook.
I also have orientation on the 19-20th, so I would like to know a little more information before picking classes out blindly while the counselors have to deal with 1000's of freshman.
I know the ACES program is not for me, especially when I know i'm going to major in Electrical engineering....

Thanks.

My friend switched from business to engineering Freshman year, according to him they just wanted him to take a science class while at UConn and get above a C. I assume his high school grades were good.

First semester freshman year is going to be basic classes. Calc I, Chem 1127, Engineering 1000 (a pass fail class), and CSE 1010. You can take those classes while in ACES.
When you go to orientation, talk to an engineering and an aces adviser and see what they say.

Alright thanks for the information.

School Academic Requirements
Students in the School of Engineering must complete the following requirements:
General Education Requirements. The University has adopted General Education Requirements in a variety of curricular areas, which must be satisfied as part of every bachelor’s degree program. Additionally, each student must demonstrate competency in the University of Connecticut’s five fundamental areas. These requirements appear in the “Academic Regulations” section of this Catalog .
Additionally, all engineering students are required to complete:
A Plan of Study form submitted during the first semester of the junior year
MATH 1131Q and 1132Q (or MATH 1125Q, 1126Q, and 1132Q), ENGR 1000 and CSE 1100 or 1010 and PHIL 1104
All majors, except B.S. in Computer Science majors, are required to complete CHEM 1127Q (or CHEM 1147Q) and PHYS 1501Q and 1502Q
The University writing (W) course requirement is fulfilled through required major-specific W course work. Most programs have the required two W courses specified in the curriculum. If there are not two W courses in the program, each student must take a minimum of one W course outside the major to satisfy the University’s General Education writing requirements.
Credit Restrictions. The following courses may not be counted for credit toward graduation in the School of Engineering: MATH courses numbered 1120Q and below; MATH 1110; PHYS 1010 and 1030Q; CSE 1000; STAT 1000; and courses labeled “independent study” or “variable topics” taken in departments outside the School of Engineering. MATH 1125, only 1 credit can be used toward the required credits for the degree. No course taken on a Pass/Fail basis may be counted for credit toward graduation or may be used to meet any course requirements of the School of Engineering. Only eight credits for courses numbered CHEM 1124Q, 1125Q, 1126Q, 1127Q, 1128Q, 1147Q, and 1148Q and only eight credits for courses numbered PHYS 1201Q through 1602Q may be applied toward the degree.

I’m assuming that I need to take most of those classes to graduate with a degree from the engineering department; however, you don’t specify how/when I could transfer into the engineering department.

“Admission to Junior Year: Students should declare their major as soon as possible, but no later than the second semester of their sophomore year.”

From this, I guess you can apply to the engineering department anytime you want. Say I wanted to apply after my first semester freshman year…would I have enough credits to transfer?

You will need to apply and be admitted to the school of engineering. The school may or may not choose to take students after one semester, or at all. It will depend on the year. You should work to complete the prerequisite and general education courses in the meantime.
