Ok, not really. But now that I've got your attention I have a question. Let's say there are two students, A and B. Each one attends a different high school but both schools have the same "academic status."
The only thing is that Student A ranks 5th out of 100 students while student B ranks 20th out of 500 students. This means that both students are exactly in the top 5 percent of their class. (And lets say just for the heck of it that both students are equally involved in ecs and are both really passionate with good test scores, recs, etc.)

My question is which do colleges look at as being better? Do colleges favor students whose class rank is higher out of a smaller amount of students or those who are lower with more students, even though both would be in the same exact percentile?

My guess is that they would both be looked at the same because their percentile rankings are exactly the same, and if their schools have exactly the same academic rating.

Of course, this is all from a hypothetical situation if we eliminate all other factors.

i dont think it should matter (some colleges ask for %'s instead), but for some reason im a lot more drawn to the 5/100, maybe reflecting a hidden bias from adcoms?

its not a typo if you typed what you meant. If you had done 26 instead of 25, since 5 and 6 are next to each other, it would be understandable. Just saying

They wouldn't have the same status. With such differences in school size, there would probably be vastly different class offerings, sports, clubs, etc.

"its not a typo if you typed what you meant"

who says I typed what I meant? Especially taking into account 60 wpm touch typing. Plenty of typos occur that aren't directly next to each other and when your mind isn't 100% focused on the input, your hands can do strange things.

But anyway, any one else have any opinions on the matter?

I feel like being second in a class of 100 would be better than 10th in a class of 500, because then you get a title and everything. Once you get much lower than that though I think it doesn't make a difference.
