I got a composite act score of 34 with:
english: 31
math: 36
reading: 31
science: 36
and.... an essay score of 7, which made my combined english/writing score 28.
I was actually surprised to see this since I never expected to score this low.

will this essay score adversely affect the impression when people look at this score?
if so, how seriously?

It is not all that surprising if you are much stronger in Math/Science then Reading/English writing may be a challenge. I still think you could have probably gotten a 9. Either way if your major is focused on M/S and your application shows strong focus and achievement in these fields you should be ok.

If you retake it, you can probably get it up. I got a 33 with a 7 the first time I took the ACT too. Just a little bit of practice with timed writing should help you get it up to a 9, which is perfectly respectable.
