ACT and SAT

So I've been taking the ACT and its my third time in June. Right now I'm at 31 but I'm going for 32. (I suck at standardized testing as you can see)

If there wasn't an English section then I could have gotten a 32 easily. Even higher. My writing score is 10/12 both times I took it. My best sections were Reading, Math, and Writing.

Since the SAT is JUST Reading, Math, and Writing, would I have a good chance of scoring in the 2200s??

To help make it less confusing: Grammar was my absolute worst section.

Will that effect my SAT score a lot?

Actually, the multiple choice of the writing section of the SAT is pretty much all grammar. Don’t worry, I stink at grammar too, but if you study from those study books enough, you’ll do fine. I’m not a great standardized tester either but really, if you know how to play the game, it shouldn’t be too hard to score a mid 2200.

For study guide, I recommend “The Official SAT Study Guide: For the New SAT”. It’s a giant blue book made by the creater of these tests–collegeboard. Get it and study it over the summer.

Good luck! :)

IMO SAT Writing is much more difficult than ACT English, given the fact they both test grammar concepts.

The ACT tests a wide range a grammatical mistakes very broadly, making the test pretty simple if you can manage your time.

The SAT tests a few specific rules very specifically. Consequently, this makes SAT grammar more nuanced and difficult.

That is just my perspective. I got a 33 on ACT English and only a 620 on SAT Writing.

Wow you’re all over the place KitKatz. Thanks. Grammar is my downfall.

Oh don’t worry, I’m not a stalker or anything ;). It’s just from personal experience and from your chance thread that you are probably somewhat stressed out and have tons of question about this whole confusing and pain in the butt process–I was in the same position last year albeit I wasn’t worried about Berkeley. So I looked up your stats. Again, I’m not a stalker. :)

that, IMO, is precisely why SAT would be easier to study for. Fewer rules=more focus. As long as you get those few rules down, you will be able to nail the test.

I learned the grammar from that big wonderful blue book and went from a 570 on the PSAT to 750 on the SAT. Really, it’s not that difficult if you take the time and learn. Also learning from SAT prep book can really help you for ACT too. My ACT overall score was 32, what killed me was the science section because I had no idea that there was even a science section before taking it (I got a 24 on that section :p) You really should study from SAT prep book and try the test out. There’s nothing you lose in that except for $45 and some time from your social life and you can gain a piece of the package that would get you accepted to Berkeley.

You will be fine.
