ACT April 2014 Forum

Hi guys, I'm a junior and this April will be my first time taking the infamous ACT. I've decided to make a forum in which we can all provide empathy for the struggle that comes with studying. Also, to maybe provide some helpful resources..?
I apologize in advance if a forum like this has already been created.
Anyway, if you all don't already use this, here is a helpful resource:
http://www.actquantum.com/act-official-tests/

I just purchased the Princeton Review ACT prep book because their books pertaining to AP classes have greatly helped. I’d check it out of ya want!

I am taking it in April too. I have heard the Barron’s book is really good. However, I haven’t really started studying.
I’ll try starting soon though.

Thanks for the website by the way!

I haven’t started studying either, does anyone know how accurate the PLAN test is in predicting your ACT score?

I plan to take the ACT in April also. Do you know if you have to talk about it with someone at school/ register through school? Or can I just register on my own. I only ask this because no on at my school takes the ACT.

@EmBio10, I actually just took the ACT today, and I too was the only one. If you just go to the ACT website, you can register there. It’ll show you a list of schools available for you to take the test, and you can pick whichever you want. That’s how I did it, at least. :)

@Aaly222

PLAN test, from what I’ve seen isn’t an accurate indicator of translation to the ACT. It can tell you if you’re a bad, decent, or good test taker but that’s about it. If you do bad on the PLAN don’t worry about it too much, nobody studies for it (at least where I am from) and if you prepare for the ACT enough

I’m also required to take the ACT on April, but I’m going to take the SAT at some other time just to see how I do, and I’ll probably retake the ACT a few times if I don’t get my 31…

I’ve gone through the entire “Cracking the ACT” third edition from the PR… I got really frustrated with the math part. Some of the stuff they put in the practice tests was not reviewed in their math review section. Anyone know any other good study tools for ACT? Is 1,296 questions helpful at all?

@EmBio10 you can register on your own.

I took the test yesterday, and I have a feeling I will be taking it again!

ACT quantum is very helpful for math

I also have a math cheat sheets I can share. Just PM me.

The things that helped me the most were

 1. Practicing with real ACT tests
 2. Timing myself for each section

I practice one section per night 4 nights per week and take a full test on the weekends. It is a lot, but has helped me improve 7 points.

Good luck everyone

Trying to ‘beat’ the test may help you improve your scores to get into a college, but they will not make you any smarter. Be careful that you do not get over your heads and end up in a school where you cannot compete against people who get those scores just by sitting down and taking the test.

@Ctesiphon I’ve heard that “The Real Act Prep Guide” is very helpful in terms of practice and that Barron’s has great strategies for science and reading.

I’ve yet to start studying but am aiming for a thirty, on my PLAN I got a 24 so I really hope it isn’t an accurate predictor.

bump

The only book I used last time I took the ACT (December) was “The Real ACT Prep Guide” by the same company that makes the test. I just took practice tests to get myself used to it. Got a 29 because my (stupid) reading score was a 25 because I didn’t finish in time :(((

This time around, I bought Barron’s ACT 36 book and friend donated her Princeton Review ACT questions book to me. Hoping to get 30+ for April’s test!

Good luck to all and hope we all don’t die studying. I’m taking the SAT in March as well and my brain is literally oozing out of my ears.
