act conversion

i know that at most competitive colleges, they take your act score and simply convert it a sat score - but my question is this: do they take your act math score and convert it to a sat math score, etc? or do they simply convert it to the 1600/2400 scale and not worry about independent scores. the reason i am so curious is because i know (specifically princeton and dartmouth) are widely known for paying attention to act science (and therefore it doesnt seem like individual conversion would make sense). does anyone know how this works?

I don't think ACTs can convert into SATs. I took ACTs today and it seems that a 36 may not translate to a 800 Math, reading, or writing. I got a 2280(800M, 800W, 680CR), but after this ACT i feel like the ACT doesn't correspond with the SAT.
SOme examples from friends:
SAT: ACT:
1910 35
2390 32
2180 30

most colleges convert the act based on proprietary information. the collegeboard conversion chart you'll see mentioned and possibly passed out by your guidance counselor is outdated.
To get an idea on what score you need review the common data set for the ACTs for the particular college you like. A 29 or better is generally what you'll need for a top 20 and beyond.
