Act emergency help!!!!

<p>I am taking the ACT tomorrow (yeah... I know... ) and I really need help reviewing for math. I looked at all the questions I got wrong, but I couldn't figure some of these out. Thanks for anyone who helps!!!! :)</p>

<p>By the way, this is the official ACT "Preparing for the ACT" booklet from 2012-2013. </p>

<p>Marcia makes and sells handcrafted picture frames in
2 sizes: small and large. It takes her 2 hours to make a
small frame and 3 hours to make a large frame. The shaded
triangular region shown below is the graph of a system of
inequalities representing weekly constraints Marcia has
in making the frames. For making and selling s small
frames and l large frames, Marcia makes a profit of
30s + 70l dollars. Marcia sells all the frames she makes.</p>

<li>For every hour that Marcia spends making frames in
the second week of December each year, she donates
$3 from that week’s profit to a local charity. This year,
Marcia made 4 large frames and 2 small frames in that
week. Which of the following is closest to the percent
of that week’s profit Marcia donated to the charity?

C. 14%
D. 16%

<p>I guessed because I was running behind on time and I really had no idea how to do it. Apparently the correct answer is E. Can anyone explain?</p>

F. |x+3| =5
G. |x-3|=5
H. |x+5| =3
J. |x-5| =3
K. |x+5| =-3 </p>

<p>Okay, the correct answer is K. And I sort of understand why... but now that I'm looking at it, I just don't really understand the question. If I got a question like this on the ACT, I just don't know how i would interpret it. Thanks :)</p>

<p>OH! I got number 51. I just read it wrong. :frowning: I skipped the part that said “For every hour”. oops.</p>

<p>F is the correct answer - the set is {-8, 2}.</p>

<p>I didn’t actually do the work, the OP said it was K, and I am assuming that their answer key is correct.</p>

<p>But looking at it, F does make sense.</p>

<p>And I believe the correct answer to 51 is C. The profit from 4 large and 2 small frames is 70(4) + 30(2) = 340. The work time for those frames is 3(4) + 2(2) = 16</p>

<p>The donation is $3 per hour, so $48. 48/340 = 0.14117… Or about 14%.</p>

<p>The answer key said the answer was K. I just don’t understand why or how. Anyone have an explanation for this question?</p>

<p>The booklet is wrong unless they have some alternate meaning for the |x| notation. I may follow up with them on that.</p>
