ACT Eng QS

In 1933, attorney and civic leader Luther Ely Smith envisioned a memorial that would recognize St. Louis's major role in the westward expansion of the United States.

A) No Change
B) attorney, and civic leader
C) attorney and civic leader,
D) attornet, and civic leader,

BTW, it is obvious that B and D are not the answer.....can any1 give me an explanation on the ans. ty

Not sure, but is it A? Because Luther Ely Smith is both a attorney and a civic leader. if you add a comma in between, then the phrase will be an apositive, and because attorney and civic leader is adjective to Luther Ely Smith, adjectives can't go into apositives.

yea A is the correct answer. Ur explanation does makes sense. ty

but I've seen sentences like....Bold and Strong, he.....
isn't that similar to the QS above?

i'd assume the answer is A.. that's what I'd put at least

any explanation?
I just can't see how its A.
I keep thinking u need a comma after leader.
(btw, correct ans = A)
but I still don't get it.
help!

hmmm..... reloadedxp, I have no idea about this kind of grammar, maybe bold and strong works like an appositive. But in the original sentence already has the an appositive "In 1933" ... Maybe 2 appositives can't go together? See, there isn't anyway that you can mash those two appositives together... I'm confused

Just take out the In 1933 from the sentence. A obviously sounds better.

"A" is the answer fo sho.
