So this is my first time taking the ACT. I got a 33 composite but only a 6 (!!!) on the essay. The topic was extremely out of my zone of knowledge, so I expected a low score (like an 8 or something) but not quite this low. I know this question has been asked a billion times already, but should I retake the ACT to possibly get a better composite and essay score? Note that I am planning on taking the SAT too in June, so would it be better to just leave it at that?

P.S. how much do colleges even care about the essay score? I have an A in AP English Language and took the AP test, is that enough for them to overlook a 6?

Thanks guys!

I got a 7 and a 35, and I’m not planning to retake the ACT. Like you, I am planning to take the SAT, and I will prepare for its essay section. However, I think that good application essays, strong english grades, and other test scores should make up for a low ACT essay score.

I don’t think they care much about it. My son got a 6, also, with a 31 Composite. He did not get into his reaches, but I doubt that played any part whatsoever - they were reaches. He got into some pretty selective colleges, including Pitzer, Occidental, Tulane, UCSD, et al. Provided you have other evidence of solid writing skills (ie. good grades in high-level English, History, etc.), it is nothing to worry about.

They really don’t care. I got an 8 on the ACT essay, but my english teacher wrote me a recommendation mentioning that I was his best writer in the class. It isn’t a big deal.

Alright, I most likely won’t retake it then (at least not only for the essay). Thanks for the replies!
