ACT Essay

can you get your essay regraded? i got an 8 and think i may have deserved a high score....is there anything i can do?

You can request to have it regraded. It costs $30 for the essay part and if they find an error they refund you the money. I sent in a letter requesting the essay to be regraded with a $30 check and am waiting to hear from them. My daughter got an 8 as well with a 35 english score, and there were no negative comments. They say it takes 4-5 weeks to get a response. I noticed they cashed my check, so they probably won’t change the grade. I will let you know when I hear from them. There is info about this on the ACT website.

how does one “find an error” in something so subjective? if they regrade and your score turns out to “actually” be plus or minus one point from your original, is it really an error?

how does it work?

I have no idea how it works other than maybe they have 2 other people read the essay and grade it. I know there is a slim chance of having it changed but I figured I might as well try it. I probably just threw $30 away. Oh well. Here is the info from the ACT site:

Hand-scoring service
If you believe that a scoring error has been made, you may ask us to hand-score your multiple-choice answer document for a fee of $30.00. (You may request to be present for a hand-scoring of your multiple-choice answer document at one of our regional offices, but you must pay an additional fee.) If you believe your Writing Test has been scored incorrectly, you may request that your essay be rescored for an additional fee of $30.00. Requests for hand-scoring must be made within three months of receiving your score report.

When requesting either or both of these services, you must provide, in writing, your name as given at the time of testing, Social Security number or ACT ID, date of birth, test date (month and year), and test location, and you must enclose a check payable to ACT Records for $30.00 (or $60.00 if you want both the multiple-choice tests and the Writing Test hand-scored). We will mail a letter to you with the results of the hand-scoring about 3–5 weeks after we receive your request.

If a scoring error is discovered, corrected reports will be sent to all previous score recipients without charge, and the hand-scoring fee will be refunded.

let us know how that goes

can your essay grade go down?

Just wanted to let you know after asking for my daughter’s essay to be rescored, looks like they changed her essay from an 8 to a 10! I was worried that they cashed my check a week ago, and that that was a sign they weren’t going to change it but today it was changed online with different comments. I should be getting a refund as well.

For all of you that couldn’t believe you got an 8, you might ask for it to be rescored.

Wow, I am really surprised! Good for her! I would have assumed that since 2 scorers each gave an essay a 4, that it would be doubtful that the score would change. OTOH, if it had been scored a 9, that would have said that someone thought the score was worthy of a 4 and another thought it was a 5. That might have been a gamble worth paying for, but I say gamble because the score could go up as well as down. Very surprising!

We figured it was worth the gamble. She thought she did well on the essay and was very upset she got an 8. She is a very good writer, and all the comments left were positive. I’m glad we took the risk. I don’t think many people do. It paid off in her case.

It sure did pay off!

I’m impressed! I’d been reading about this option, and was surprised that it was even offered - especially compared to the SAT, where any second look at the essay is basically just to make sure there wasn’t some sort of clerical error, like the full essay not being provided to the graders or something.

Was this for the April 4 exam? It seems like it didn’t take anywhere near the 4-5 weeks they said it would take.

Yes it was for the April 4th exam. It took about 2 1/2 weeks.

Thanks, and congrats to your D on getting scores that match her talent!
