Currently I have a 27 composite , but I really want a 30. English was my highest subscore(32). Does anyone have any tips for breaking into the 30s and how can I get a 30+ in science?

I think it depends on exposure most of the time, as it’s especially hard to bring your score up when it’s already high. I had a 30 composite (on a practice exam) starting out. Starting out at a higher score (such as yours), you don’t need to learn new material content-wise, it’s just going to require practice - but also take the “real” test a couple of times. I took tons of practice exams at a test center (got multiple 29’s, 30’s, and a 31) which gave me lots of exposure to the material but I did not actually sit down and “study”. The tests helped a lot with time management, since the ACT is very time sensitive. I took the ACT after my class was over and thought I didn’t do well as I wasn’t able to finish 3 of the sections; I got a 31. I took it again a month later without any further tests/practice and was able to work through it all much quicker, and got a 33. The score increased just from taking practice exams, so I definitely recommend taking lots of them! And if you don’t do as well as you’d like when you take the ACT itself, taking a break from it then retaking won’t hurt; sometimes the tests are just easier than other times.

I forgot to add some info I was told at the test-center for ACT tutoring – focus on bringing your English up more rather than your science. The science was always my lowest subscore and I wasn’t able to move it too much even after much difficulty. It was much easier for me to focus on moving my math from a 31 to a 35, since I’m much more comfortable with that section. They won’t care what your individual scores are, unlike with the SAT, it’s just about your average. If you really want a 30, you can still get an average of 30 (or even higher) if your science is below that. Since your English subscore is a 32, you could do decent on the Reading & Math (30’s) you can get a 27 on the science and still get a 30 overall. But, you are probably able to bring your English up higher so there’ll be even more “wiggle-room” with the reading & math sections. Focus on what you can improve. If you are having trouble with the science and can’t bring it up past a 30, then focus on the other sections. Sorry I wrote so much. Good luck!
