ACT Improvement

So I took the state (MI) mandated ACT in March 2010 and got a composite of 31 (disappointed because my practice tests I was getting 33s). Needless to say I retook it in April (even before I got my March score back) and received a composite of 35. However, I talked to my counselor today and she said that with the official transcript and common app forms they send my State mandated test scores. I already sent in my April ACT online.
Will Michigan like the improvement? or will could they careless?
I had planned on only sending the 35.

Assuming that your gpa is pretty good (3.9) it shouldn’t matter much to the admissions team (though of course they will like the improvement), but a 35 can definitely bump you to scholarship level so its always better to have a chance at some extra money.

I think they’ll notice. My son also got a couple points lower on the MI ACT than on his practice ACTS. Took the regular ACT and scores quite a bit higher. I would guess that Michigan is used to Michigan kids taking the state ACT and then taking the national ACT and they will notice your 35. The state ACT is only a couple years old so I don’t know if the lower state score vs. the national score is a trend or just what happened. I wouldn’t worry about it. Our school also posts the state ACT on the transcript and the kids send their own national test scores.

The ACT taken during State Testing is the same (not exact questions, but same style, set to the same norms, etc) as the ACT taken on a National Testing date. That is why ACT provides national percentiles on the results and that is why an ACT score given during State Testing has the same weight as an ACT score given during National Testing.

Score increases in ACT assessments are usually the result of students already having familiarity with the test, what its looking for and the increased knowledge that comes with a later date, not any difference between the assessment types.

I took both and my composite didn’t change (though subscores did).

Bro, it shouldn’t matter. Your GPA is solid, umich would be ■■■■■■■■ to screw you over.

Michigan will take your highest ACT score so it shouldn’t matter.
