ACT in a few days

So I've been studying for a week for the ACT (Not enough, I know) and I'm shooting for at least a 30 (32 if I don't want to retake) in order to boost my chances at UNC. I remember getting a perfect score on the Math section of the PLAN, as well as a fairly high score on the others. I think my overall score was a 28/32 (can't remember clearly) so what should I practice on? I think I need to work on writing (My writing skills are fine, but my handwriting is atrocious). I also just took a English part of a Practice ACT from the McGraw-Hills book and scored a 66/75 (Pretty bad, was watching a movie) which equated to a 32, but there's supposedly a correction factor which bumped that down to a 30, although that would make it impossible to get a 36 on the English, which it says it's possible. Sorry if the sentences are a bit jumbled, I'm just a bit stressed.

Bump, please can someone respond?

I really don’t remember what year they give you the PLAN but it does not necessarily reflect your ACT score (mine PLAN score was really low but my ACT was fine). Neither does scoring a little lower on a practice test section.

I would say don’t stress it so much. If you’re worried about a particular section, study for it, but just relax a little and believe that you will do well. You definitely want to make sure your handwriting is legible as well. Good luck!

Eh I used the McGraw Hill to study for the ACT and I scored an average of a 33concertt on it, while only getting a 31 on the real deal. The science section is deceptively easy. I suggest you get a supplement for princeton review or the real act book for the science section.

Okay thanks. I’m trying to get into UNC, so what should I shoot for on this exam? Personally, I’ll be content with anything over 30, but I would prefer 32+

I also would love to go to UNC. I just got a 28 on my first ACT and I am also trying to bump my score up to a 30.

Yeah I read that the average ACT score for a UNC student is 28-32 so it looks like you’re barely in that. It would be awesome to get above a 32.

Art thou in-state or out of state?

Yea I am out of state. Unfortunately, it is much harder for out of state kids than in state

Canefreak2001, you’ll want at least a 33, unfortunately … It’s /much/ harder OOS than IS.

I didnt realize it needed to be that high. I take mostly all AP and Honors Classes, My Unweighted gpa is a 3.7 and my weighted is a 4.91.

That’s decent, have you made a chances thread? I would recommend that; I can’t give you the best advice, but I’ll try.

Haha alright. I also have tons of EC’s and I started my own business. Will that help out a lot?

Well, ECs always help, and starting a business is pretty impressive. I do want to see what kind of ECs and what kind of business; however.

I Have played high school football every year, I am currently on Varsity. I coached kids in a Youth Basketball League. I go to a homeless shelter often and help out there. I am in National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Social Science National Honor Society, and FBLA(Future Business Leaders of America). Elections for the club are soon and I will probably run for a leadership position in Math and Business club. I am currently going to state competition for Business club also. The Business I started is I make highlight tapes for high school athletes who are trying to get an athletic scholarship. I also have a YouTube channel which is part of by Business whereby I have over 3000 Subscribers and 2 Million Views and I have gotten a job offer for video from the Univ of Miami. I have like a partnership with them where I make videos with them.

lol needing a 33 to get into UNC-CH? you must be kidding me…

Most kids from my school get in with a 28+, and a 30 just about seals the deal. For in-state a 30 is definitely good enough

And for out of state, I can’t imagine you needing a 33 to get into CH… people get into lower ivys & schools like Duke comfortably with a 33 and UNC is selective, but not that selective

Cane: Those seem like good ECs, but I’m not going to say that you’re a definite in since your OOS. I do think you have a good shot; however.

NCDukie: Yeah the average for UNC is 28-32 but I just want to have a higher than average so I can stand out among In-State students. I feel as if my high school (named one of the worst and most violent schools in my county) has not given me a good chance at UNC-CH, so I feel I need to compensate for that. If you would, please, check out my chances thread.

NCdukie, I’ve seen 2300+ SAT, 4.0 UW people get rejected from Chapel Hill OOS. Although this is not the norm, OOS standards /are/ much higher. I was merely suggesting that a 33 would be safe – though not by any means that anything lower would cause a rejection.

Would it look better to do an internship over the summer or to get a job or does it not make a difference?

Internship seems more prestigious, as theres no motivation in money.
