When I was applying to schools (1977), there was no internet, so I didn’t spend time on blogs. I spent three hours a day kicking footballs once the snow cleared, lifted weights, ran, studied the kinesiology of placekicking, watched films of me kicking (hard to get in those days) and read every book I could on the subject. Ad nauseum.

Before my senior year, I wrote (typing letters one at a time, before word processing) to about 100 football coaches - all schools rated Very Competitive in admissions or higher with football teams, and sent them a letter about how far I could kick, plus an article in the paper about me, along with my academic info. That got serious attention from about 10 - 15 schools, in part because it was easy to evaluate what I did - 50 yards is 50 yards, regardless of the competition.

That would be tougher now, because the competition is thicker, especially in sports where the coach can’t easily evaluate the caliber of the athlete by his numbers.

If he’s just entering his junior year, he still has a good bit of development in front of him. It’s hard to say how good he’ll be four years from now (as a college junior). College coaches have a tough time evaluating kids, and they’ll want to wait as long as they can before committing to him. The recruiting game can be nasty - they excite many kids, and then pick only a few.

If you want more info on the recruitment game, private message me.

@StanfordCS… The 20 is probably BS… more than likely a ■■■■■.

My older son got a 34 with great stats, lots of AP’s, etc, etc, and he got into Stanford this year. Competition is fierce so you need to stand out with EC’s. Once again, good luck.

I think for Stanford, Hispanic may not be really a URM because they probably receive an abundant amount of Hispanic applicants due to its location in California.

@fridac2 Do you mean would U of I still accept me into General Studies? I’m not sure about that. I’d have to look into it. It seems like they would though.
Now that I think about it, I really would have to boost up my science score to get into MCB. Even if I get a little low on science, though, I’ll have all my science classes at my Community College to help the application. If all goes well next year, I will have taken and gotten A’s in Biology, Chemistry, and Anatomy I and II.

Stanford is 1% Native American, 8% black, and 18% Hispanic, compared to 1%, 4%, and 6% respectively for UChicago, and 1%, 5%, and 10% for Cornell (just to pick two colleges near the same level).

Hey guys! Excited to stay up late tonight for my first ever ACT scores. I got a 35 on two red book practice tests (36s on every section but english) but felt like the actual june test was way harder. I have a 1530 M+V on the SAT. What is the minimum score I could send to not decrease the prestige of my admissions portfolio (like a 20 would obviously drop the level of my app)? Thanks!
