ACT Math question

For those of you who used a TI-83 during the test - did the administrator clear your calculator's RAM?

I’ve not heard of this happening to anyone. I would recommend that you clear anything that could be considered cheating off your calculator just in case something happens, like a procter checking, getting accused of something, etc.

Thanks rachelm57, I have a lot of useful formulas on my calculator, but I don’t know if their use would be acceptable. Do you know if downloaded formulas are considered “cheating”?

I’m not 100% sure. I think they technically are. You may check the Act website, it may be a bulk of reading to find it, but it’s probably there

Given that you can easily define a function or write a program on a TI calculator (e.g. f(a,b,c) = (-b + sqrt(b^2 - 4ac))/2a) during the test, it shouldn’t be considered cheating.

The proctors are usually volunteer teachers who may know nothing about calculators or how to clear them. There are no instructions on the ACT proctors’ guide about clearing the RAM. The worst that can happen is that they do clear everything.

I am not advocating programming things into your calculator as many consider that cheating but I do believe you should be allowed to do so.

Thank you for all of your replies :)
