ACT Mc Graw Hill Prep Book

Hi!

I haven't taken the ACT yet, and I first tried the Practice Test 1 from the Mc Graw Hill Prep Book

I got
68/75 in English
36/40 in Reading
60/60 in Math
39/40 in Science

When converted using the scale formula written in the book, it would become
31 English
34 Reading
36 Math
36 Science
34.25 Composite (rounded down to 34).

I think that there is something wrong in the formula of the book, especially for English. That means that if you get 75/75, you would just get 34, which is clearly wrong.

I see from the ACT preparing booklet here: http://media.act.org/documents/preparing.pdf

that my raw scores correspond to
31 English
31 Reading
36 Math
35 Science
33.25 Composite (rounded down to 33).

My question: Are the practice tests of the book easier than usual? And why does the book gives scores 3 pts. higher for reading and 1 pt higher for science.

Also, if I consistently get this kind of scores in practice tests, do you think that prep would be necessary?

Thanks!

Just stop using this book and get the real ACT prep guide.

This book is by far the best. Why use artificially created tests when you can be taking real ones?

I have this book and the conversion methods are so off. The science passages are all over the place in difficulty. I’ve made everything from a 24-34 on the science–that should not be.

When you get into the English and Reading the scores are not necessarily accurate because some of the inference questions don’t fit like puzzle pieces, like you’d expect them to. Even the ACT does this better, at least on some level. Also a lot of the reading answers are very contrasted from each other, which is never the case on the ACT.

Overall, it’s ok to take these tests (Im taking one today) but do use Princeton/Barrons/Real ACT to be realistic about your scores. After all, the McGraw Hill book is mostly just for understanding the format.

I guess they try to be conservative. For English, you do need 75/75 to get a 36. Nevertheless, I found McGraw Hill prep book to be horrible at least in Math. They have questions that do not make sense or give you a wrong answer and explanation. The guys who wrote it may have failed the test. :)
