Needlessly to say that, I'm extremely unhappy with my score and that I did put about 5 hours a week for a month before the test (Studied on Barron's 36 and finished it thoroughly). Literally I was really surprised and i'm new to these standard based tests (I'm in AP Calc AB(A) and also AP English Language(A), and more. etc. 3.8 GPA UW)

Now, I do realize that is a low amount of effort on my part, but mainly for the people who have had success on the ACT I really want your input for my re-approach to this test.

What I figure now is that:
Take many practice tests
Review Barron's again?? (Any other book suggestions?)
Possibly get Princeton's big book of practice questions

What else? I appreciate anyone's effort to help me, and mainly I want to bring up my sub scores of Math and English higher than a 28. (That is my personal goal for what I'm applying for)

I plan on retaking in September and put a lot of time into studying over the summer. Thanks guys.

Im curious how youre doing so poorly considering youre doing so well in school. Practice tests, and learning how tot take the act will help you. (no reading the science passages for example.)

You should also get the Real ACT Book (Red book) since it includes 5 previous tests. I think it should give an accurate prediction for your score.
Also, did you not time yourself when you prepared? The ACT is all about timing so you need to constantly practice it.

I really did understand the timing, i paced myself well during the test and i thought i actually would get atleast ~27 comp but that totally changed. I will do that thank you :)

hey man english is the easiest to improve on. I went from getting a 22 on the english to getting 28+ every time. Take multiple practice tests and look over your answers. A lot of the question types will be the same so make sure you correct yourself.

This is the same situation I was in! I took the ACT February 2013 and I got a 23 (E: 21, M:25, R:24, S:21). I ran out of time for every section, and I was very unhappy with my score. I took it again this past test date and I got a 26 (E:31, M: 25, R: 25, S: 24). I’m still not satisfied with my score, but I did improve a lot! I didn’t study either time, but one thing that helps you so much is to relax. I realized that a 23 could get me into almost all of my public state schools (except for a few like UW Madison), so I wasn’t as nervous that I wouldn’t get into ANY college. That being said, I am going to study this time and take a lot of practice tests. I improved my English score by 10 points, and English is by far my worst subject. I highly recommend just trying to stay calm! As unhelpful as that may sound, I really think that is the reason that I improved my score. Also, as most people mention you should get the Real ACT book. I plan on purchasing it soon. Good luck next time! I’ll be taking it in September too :)
