ACT or SAT For Michigan??

Does it matter what standardized scores that you send to University of Michigan. Really want to get in to their engineering program.

ACT 30 - going to retake in Sept at the suggestion of some people on this site. If I get 32 or better should I just send that? Do not have the time to retake SAT's before EA deadline/

Help!!!!!

just send the ACT. You don’t even need to retake it.

I am oos, need all the help I can get. Really think 30 is competetive enough?

30 is probably below average for engineering… you might be okay if your other stats are good, though.

thanks for the reply. Hopefully my ACT will increase to 32. But I heard some schools like the SAT better, does Michigan?

No, I doubt it since Michigan is a midwestern public school. I’ve really only heard that about Ivy league schools mostly

I have searched in vain for any real evidence that any highly-regarded college in the U.S. prefers the SAT to the ACT, or vice versa. I have read admissions officers’ statements that they treat the two standardized tests equally, and they have no incentive to lie (quite the reverse; they want the best students to apply and to submit their best scores). I’ve also asked other posters to present any evidence they have of a preference so this perennial question can be settled and have never seen any. As a result, the information that the SAT is preferred seems to be mere repetition of old rumors.

Thanks for the info. Hopefully you are right. I have heard so many different stories.

Last year the median engineering act was 31; if your other stuff is really good a 30 is still prob fine, but it’s good idea to raise it a point or two (also, they put more weight on the math score than LSA does, so try to make that high as well).

I’d go ACT, I didn’t even send my SAT in

how’s your gpa?

If that 30 includes a 35 or 36 Math, I wouldn’t even bother reataking the ACT. A perfect/near perfect math score is more important than a higher composite.

I got into engineering without taking the ACT…I am also oos and on the east coast where I think SAT is more of the norm…But I did have a bit higher scores than you did…I got around a 2200 not that I am saying you need a 2200 to get in. I think if you can manage a 2050 with higher math scores, you’ll be fine standardized test wise. As far as gpa is concerned… I think a gpa between 4-4.2 weighted would be good, and definitely an unweighted above 3.5 (it also kinda depends on what kind of classes you’re taking…so if you’re taking solely “normal level” classes you should try to get around a 4 gpa…AP/honors or w/e should be above 4)

My gpa w=3.9 uw=3.7 (maybe 3.65 I have to fiqure it out, my school has only weighted on the transcript). I hace 8 honors courses 9,10,11. I am taking AP Physics, AP stats, and ap english in 12th. I think I am in trouble unless I bring up my ACT. Going to visit campus next week.

I’d retake it if I were you. You have nothing to lose…

All you need is ACT. I got a 30 my first time taking it, I was uncertain about it so I took it again and got a 32 and I got in (my gpa was 3.6 and I’m in state-- I think the higher ACT score helped somewhat).

But you should be fine even if you don’t retake it! :)

…and u almost always do better

For the love of god, do not send those SAT scores in. Not only is your ACT far better, Michigan in general likes the ACT over the SAT (though it really does not matter if you sent in just SAT scores). We need to see your score breakdown for your ACT. A 30 can work if your math and science are rather high, but a point or two more is going to be far better for you.

If you have a 30, a point or two more likely will not make a difference.

The ACT is more accepted this way.
