ACT or SAT?

Anyone who has taken both..which was easier and better?

SAT is more the standard, but I recommend the ACT, because you can guess, you get decent scores, and the questions are mostly down to earth and all of the info (for the notorious) science section can be found in the graphs/statements/tables/etc.

I found the ACT to be easier than the SAT, although for the ACTs, it always seems like you don't have enough time. And for the ACTs, they don't penalize you for guessing so that's a huge plus. =)

Plus most schools will now accept the ACT plus Writing in place of the SAT AND the SAT 2. So you only need to do one morning of testing instead of 2.

I highly reccomend the ACT, due to the fact that it's easier, less of a hassle (no dealings with collegeboard), and just all around a better test.

The only way to tell which you will do better on (or whether you would do equally well on both) is to take practice tests. People vary.

I did better on the SAT, but that's just me. It seems to be different for everyone.

I might eventually take the ACT too. Isn't it true that a 36 looks better than a 2400 on the SAT?

For me, my ACT scores were much higher than my SAT scores when I compared them with a score correlation chart. I only took the SAT once and I took the ACT twice and submitted that to all my colleges along with my SAT II scores.

I doubt that it's true for a 36 on the ACT to look better than a 2400 on the SAT; they say it's the same challenge level (although I did better on the ACT--maybe because of the format?), and I think they are equally impressive.

Particularly if you do well in science, try the ACT, as it has a science section.

ACT. It is much easier, since you can guess. And if you like science, the test is definately for you.

Although most schools accept either test, i think that for east coast schools and west coast schools it is best to go with SAT because that is what most applicants are submitting. It is easier for adcoms to compare you to other applicants if you all took the same test. Definatley use ACT in the mid west. But that's just my opinion.

hmm, don't a lot of East coast schools convert ACTs to SAT-type scores?

Hansel: even P has admitted that it will accept the ACT now. That just leaves Wake Forest and Harvey Mudd as two SAT only schools in the top tier.

My suggest to all is to try BOTH. The vast majority of kids do equally well on both tests, but some do much better on one or the other. Take the ACT first, but don't even list your HS to receive a report, nor any colleges. Only you will see the scores at home. If you like what you see, you can be done with the test, and send them later. Or, you can then take the SAT and compare.

SAT is easier, imo.

I did better on the ACT, but I'd take both if I were you. I took 3 SAT 3 ACT and 4 SAT 2's (2 of 2 subjects) so I know what I'm talking about lol. I got a 35 on one section of the ACT but did badly on the science section so that kinda sucked...but hey it's all a luck of the draw on which you'll do better on. If colleges counted writing for my year then I might have submitted my SAT, but my ACT was better in this situation.

Sorry to say "1AmongMany" but if you send in your SAT 2 scores the SAT scores automatically go along with them. Sorry to say but that is what happens, I'm positive.

the general consensus seems to be that you should take the ACT, and that if you take both that it couldn't hurt.

One more thing about the ACT- you only have to tell your colleges ONE score report, that means they don't have to know the other 2 dozen times you took the test to get a 36 :-p

Take both and see which one you do better on and just send the scores from the higher. Personally, ACT was better for me and I could apply to schools without worrying about spending extra money on SAT 2s. Studies have shown that girls genrally do better on the ACT while guys do better on the SAT. This is not always true but from all my friends it was the normal trend.

i also took both and did better on the act, but i would recommend taking the test that your high school has prepared you for or offered classes in
