I'm not sure what to take. I hear ACT is easier, but I hear colleges prefer SAT. Occassionally, people tell me I should just take both?! But isn't it better to choose one and get perfect score rather than recieving mediocre scores on both?! Please.. help. Do colleges prefer SAT over ACT? What should I take?

Generally, more students take the SAT, but that doesn't mean colleges prefer it - they consider both tests equally. Personally, I think it's worth taking both just to see which one you prefer (I did significantly better on the ACT than the SAT, and I took them around the same time). Anyone who gets a perfect score on one test will probably do fairly well on the other, but there are differences. ACT has science, SAT has vocabulary, etc.

Colleges don't prefer either. Really. They don't.

You're not going to receive "mediocre scores" on both tests just because you take both. You should obviously study for both tests. If you really only want to take one though, look at the test makers sites and look at some of the tests. If you feel you can do better on the SAT, take it. If you want to take the ACT instead, go ahead. It really doesn't matter.

Actually, the numbers of students who take the ACT and SAT are about equal. I think there are a few more students who take the SAT, but the trend favors the ACT. Colleges don't prefer one or the other, unless it's a school that requires Subject Tests, even with ACT. Those schools have more experience with the SAT. If you're really struggling with this, just take both.

Well since we are talking about the SAT or ACT, can you guys help me in my small dillema?

I'm a upcoming senior in high school and I took both the SAT and ACT, but don't know which one to send to colleges. Could you CC members reccomend what I should do?

THanks for responses, and sorry for somewhat hijacking this thread.

I think your SAT and ACT score are pretty comparable. You might as well send both; one isn't significantly better than the other.

DFSMIN54, it's fine! i'm glad you asked your question and got that off your chest. =D

Anyways, THANK YOU FOR ALL THE REPLIES. any more information would be great. Also, is it okay to take ACT with SAT subject tests?

Yep, the ACT and the SAT are 100% interchangeable, but SAT 2's are a must either way (assuming the college requires them at all).

If I were you, I'd do some practice ACT and SAT tests so you can get an idea of which one you prefer. I still recommend taking both, but if you find one suits you much better than the other, go in that direction.
