ACT Prep

Any advice for someone who is going to be taking the ACT? I will be using my summer to study for the ACT, so any advice would help. My goal is around a 32.

Some general ACT advice I’ve given others: In order to prep for the ACT, I would personally just go to a bookstore (if there’s one nearby) and sit down with the prep books and just keep doing the practice tests (writing your answers on a separate piece of paper of course) and using the proper timing of the real ACT while doing it. Try especially using prep books that are much harder than the actual ACT (I remember using Barrons and The Princeton Review) so that you’re ready to handle a much easier test! I think I would also practice going quickly through the tests in order to leave yourself some time in each section to go back to questions that you might not have been so sure about and double check your answers for that.

Once you’ve done one or two tests, you can determine which section of the ACT you need the most help on, and, from there, you can read through the sections of the prep books to see if they have any tips to help you do better in that specific section.

Also, regarding timing: go through each section by just answering ones you know FOR SURE. Don’t get stuck looking at problems you’re confused about or problems that take a little more thinking time. Circle the question in the test packet and move on! Come back to it at the very end so that you can look at it with fresh eyes and (hopefully) without as much pressure (since you left yourself time to look at it by finishing all the easier questions).

If you really don’t know how to solve something, just guess! The ACT doesn’t penalize you for guessing, so take advantage of that! Don’t leave any question unanswered. And, as always, budget your time and ALWAYS know how much time you have left. Every minute makes a difference on the ACT!

I hope this helps. If you need any more advice, I’d love to give you some! Good luck this summer!

@whenyoubelieve Thank you so much. My friend, who took the ACT last week, told me that I should go talk to my former geometry teacher from my freshman year about the math section because it involves tons of geometry. Is this correct?

@ryanalexander116 Oh, yes, completely. A good 30 to 45 percent of the math section is geometry, if I remember correctly! I’d recommend relearning the basics before taking a practice test in order to make sure you’re getting an accurate representation of your skills when you start the practice tests.

Take a practice ACT and study the ines you get wrong, I did that and it boosted my score two points! I only took it twice and my highest was a 24 so hopefully I can raise two points each time in order to get a 30 or so!
