ACT Question

I recently scored a 33 on the ACT. My sub scores were 35 in Math, 35 in English, 29 in Reading, and 31 in science. While I understand that colleges place great emphasis on the composite score, I am very curious as to whether the English and Math sections are the more important sub sections (as those were by far my best). I read that they are the equivalent to the SAT MATH and SAT CR and after I did some quick research I realized that my 35 math converted to a 790 (want to be an engineer so quite happy!) and english 35 was also a 790 equivalent. This would make up a 1580 score!! this seems to good to be true however. I noticed that colleges have charts online that only include average composite, Math, and english scores. This would support this belief that those two are the most important as the science and reading sections are not listed. Please let me know your understanding on the matter. Thanks!

I think that colleges would place more importance on the reading or science sections as compared to the english. It seems this way to me due to the nature of the tests compared to one another. On one hand, you have the english test, which is putting rules regarding the mechanics of the language to use. This is important to be able to do, sure, but it is influenced more by your experience with the language rather than intelligence. On the other hand, the reading and science tests are focused around reading comprehension. Being able to understand what is going on in a story and being able to understand scientific concepts takes priority in my eyes as it more closely parallels intelligence. You clearly have good reasoning ability and intelligence, as evidenced by your high math score, so maybe try reading more to focus your mind on different areas.

I know some colleges will look at your math and the combined english/writing score. That closely reflects the SAT’s 1600 scale.

I got a 32 for combined reading and writing. Is that 99 percentile?

There are many colleges that consider the ACT English and math sections the more important section scores. There are, contrary to what was mentioned above, none that consider the reading and science sections as the more important section scores of the four sections. Those that use conversions between SAT and ACT convert math and math and CR (SAT and English (ACT) when doing conversions. None use the ACT reading section to convert to a an SAT score. There are some, such as Gtech and Rose Hulman (two engineering schools), that consider only the math and English (and Gtech the combined English/writing) and ignore completely science, reading, and the composite score.

FIREBALL379 yes the combined English/writing score of 32 is the 99th percentile.

With a composite of 33 and the combined of 32 you are all set. Good job!

Thank you!
