Are Math and Reading weighted the most as those correspond most closely to the SAT where those sections are significantly more important than writing which is basically the ACT English.

Can I still get into Duke with this score?

Other scores are

SAT 2 Bio-710 (freshman year)
SAT 2 MATH 2c-780

I am asian and from a low income family with no father present (he was abusive) and grades have suffered due to aunt's cancer.

WIll this mean my scores will be viewed in a more positive light?

Have you taken the SAT? Some people find that they do better on one test than the other. (I did really well on the SAT but the ACT never clicked as much for me)

It is worth a shot if you still have the time. (of course if you are a senior you probably don't but otherwise, yeh)

its really only the english that bothers me. I thought it didn;t count as much since the SAT Writing is ignored. I thought math and reading were more important.

The SAT Writing is discounted mostly because it's new and therefore difficult to interpret, not because of any inherent lack of usefulness of the test. The ACT has not been recently changed, and it's the composite score which is likely to matter.

The poster who suggested an SAT attempt is right on the money.

No I got a 180 on my PSAT. I doubt Ill get above a 2150 sat (which is what a 31 act is equal to) without any studying.

I know it sin't discounted. That would be ridculous. I was wondering if it is counted less than math and reading which are probably a better inidcator of college sucess. Also I scored pretty well on the writing so its not like I suck at humantiies related subjects

It is a little silly to gauge how one would do on the SAT based on PSAT scores I think. Really the only way you'd know if you'd do better on the SAT is if you took it. Now I don't know how it would work for you in the time area so that is a more legitimate concern. (also, I'm not such a fan of "studying" for the SAT as it isn't really a subject test; subject tests like the MCAT or AP tests one should study for but for the SAT you just need a good nights sleep)

Also, can't tell you what the admissions office thinks about certain sections of the ACT. Have you considered posing the question directly to them? (though they might just tell you not to worry about it)

(of course I come here more to answer questions about the school than getting into the school but this just isn't the season for that I guess)

I think a 31 is too low for HYPMS. For these schools, a 33+ for an unhooked applicant would put you into their 'score-safe' pools. But I agree that a 31 will not get you rejected from Duke.

Unless you mention this in your essay, I don't think it will strengthen your application or help your scores be viewed in a more lenient light.

amb3r I did mention that (abuse) in one of my essays and it was very well written. The cancer thing was mentioned in a rec. Also I am applying early to Yale and Stanford through Questbirdge so I will automatically be viewed as a low income student.
