Everytime I take the ACT reading practice tests, I always finish 3 of the 4 passages with only about 4 minutes to spare. And with Science, time becomes an issue as well. Is this a problem for you guys also? And does anybody know from experience, tips, practice, etc what to do in my case?

It is very normal. I am no expert with the ACT, but I may be able to help.

When you take practice tests, have a timer of some sort like a watch handy. Time each section, pace yourself. Take 2-4 minutes to read the passage, and jump into the questions. I recommend not doing the questions, or the passages in order. If you pace yourself right, after some practice, you should become quicker.

For science, jump right to the questions. If you dont know a question within a reasonable amount of time, skip it. For the ACT, you want to make sure you can at least have a shot at every question. If you spend too much time on 1 harder question and you end up having to guess on some questions in the end, you may have missed some really easy questions that you would have answered correctly instantly.

Not sure what else to do, lots of great people here to help.

Develop strategies for the reading section that work best for you - whether it's skimming, carefully reading it first, or just going straight to the answers.

Not much you can do with the Science i'd say besides what has already been mentioned. I personally think that being familiar with the material helps a great deal on the science. While nearly all of the answers to the questions are in the passages/charts, reading those and figuring them out takes up a lot of time. If you know enough about the subject to skip that step and go right to answering the questions, that can help a great deal with the time constraints.

For reading, try to read the passages as quickly as you can while still being able to comprehend (knowing what the tone, mood, characters, setting, conflict, etc. is). Go the questions, and refer back to the passage to make sure your answer is right; this improves accuracy. Time yourself and make sure you only spend a certain amount of time on each of the passages. If there are four, and you have 35 minutes, you have about 9 minutes for each passage. So pace accordingly.

Reading is rarely a problem because I'm a fast reader, but I agree science was troublesome. I'm always dumfounded by the actual science passages, so I simply go straight to the graphs, considering the ACT rarely (from my experience) tests you on what's being said in the passages (except the one where you compare arguments).

So far, I've taken 3-4 practice tests from the REAL ACT prep guide and the PR book and have not had trouble finishing each section timed ( Except for the science section which I always finish at a few min before the deadline). I always seem to have about 15 min left for the rest of the sections. Is this because the practice test is easier than the real thing?

for Science you don't even really have to read the passages or the graphs first...just go straight to the questions and then refer back to the info.
