Ds is on the spectrum but very bright. As you know, compensation using his intelligence affects the ability to see deficits in formal psychoeval testing. He does have a significant difference between GAI and overall WISC score because of lower working memory and processing speed scores. I think WM challenges affect comprehension and hypothesize that’s why he reads quickly and either struggles with comprehension or with verbal and written answers. I don’t know so don’t know how to help him in the classroom. Surprisingly, he got a 35 on ACT Reading. Can anyone explain what this means in practice? Does it make sense?
It’s probably all about organizing his thoughts when he has to answer in writing or verbally. He has problems with the “output” side of things. But with the ACT, it’s multiple choice so he just has to understand to get the right answer. Did he test with extra time? That probably helped. The good news is his actual comprehension is great when he’s really on task. ACT Reading is relatively short, too, so I’m sure that worked in his favor,.
