For me, the ACT, in general, is an easy exam for science, English, and math. But I CAN’T do the act reading at all. Scoring mid to low 20s in reading while mid to high 30 in the rest. I got some practice tests and the 2016-2017 act prep book.
Any tips or resources to help increase that score by like 10 points.
Definitely challenge yourself by setting your timer to 30 minutes instead of 35 minutes. It really helped me with my time issue, and raised my reading score. Figure out a method that works for you; do you do better if you skim through the questions first before you skim the passage, or if you skim the passage first and then tackle the questions? Don’t waste your time reading the entire passage thoroughly.
Honestly, ACT reading questions ALWAYS have an answer in the passage SOMEWHERE. There’s only few times when the answer is in the passage ambiguously; most of the times, the question options are reworded/phrased slightly differently or exactly from the passage.
Another strategy: take out three reading sections (so 12 passages in total). Set your timer to 70 minutes (b/c you’re taking 3 reading sections tests in a row) or less if you want to challenge yourself. You’ll feel rushed and get all panicked, but that’s okay. That’s the purpose of this exercise. I was surprised when I finished all 12 passages in time.
Because these exercises typically are a challenge for most of the people, don’t be disappointed when you get a lot of questions wrong. I was like that too, but now I get pretty high scores in reading (average of 34-36).
