How much does UR look at other standardized test scores besides the SAT? my counselor has suggested I take the ACT or SAT subject tests, but I was just wondering how much that would help? I have already taken the SAT once and gotten a 1540, or 2230 combined. And I have some 4/5 AP scores.

Also, I still have to write my CommonApp essay, but already sent in my supplement this summer. Will they read the supplement first? Because, looking back, I don't think my answers were especially great, but you can still get the feel of who I am from reading them... How important are those?

And I wish I had figured out how awesome UR is last year (my top school no less!) Because junior year is when they give out those Susan B. Anthony/ Bausch and Lomb scholarships, and I hadn't expressed interest, so I missed out :( are there merit scholarships available of that amount or greater?
Oh, and I've had an interview already too.

thanks!

If you are happy with your SAT scores-send them. You really don’t need to take the ACT since your SAT scores are strong. I would consider taking the SAT II, though, simply because some universities might want/require them. They also give you a chance to show your particular academic strengths.

Do NOT send your AP scores. They won’t get looked at until AFTER you get accepted and have matriculated. Your transcript will indicate that you’ve taken AP classes.

RE: your essays. Your file won’t be looked at until it’s complete–that means ALL your essays are done and your LORs, standardized scores and grade reports have arrived. In what order the essays get read–it depends on which admissions rep has your file. Some read the Common AP first; some read the supplement first.

RE: merit scholarships. Yes, there are merit scholarships worth up to full tuition (more than the Sue B and/or B&L–btw, just because you received one of those in high school, doesn’t mean you will automatically get that same award at UR. Those awards are competitive and while those who received the award in HS are considered, it’s not guaranteed.)

Thanks! I’m glad you told me about the AP scores, I hadn’t sent them yet. And thanks for the hope about the scholarships :)

Glad to help.

My D attended a high school that does not nominate students for UR awards. D still received a substantial merit scholarship. (She’s now junior at UR.) So there’s always hope!

WayOutWestMom… Thanks for providing motiv8ed with all that info, and, I can’t believe your daughter is a Junior already!

I know, Mike. Neither can I! She loves UR and UR has given so many opportunities to grow and explore. BTW, you might find this interesting–she’s thinking of taking her PRG and using it to do a summer of field work in dinosaur paleontology with Jack Horner of MSU in the Montana badlands this summer. (Wow! Something completely unexpected. She was never a dino kinda kid…)
