ACT Results and UW-Madison

I just got my ACT results back, and currently I see UW-Madison as one of my top choices (I'm in state.)

My cumulative score on the ACT was a 30, but I am curious about the way that the writing scores are viewed. I scored a 7 on the writing; not a bad score, but a score that I feel doesn't reflect my capabilities. Personally, I am confident in my college-level writing skills, but clearly, my opinions cannot influence the objectivity of an application. Writing is essential to a successful college experience, which leads me to ask: With my current scores, would you recommend that I take the ACT again to try to raise my writing score? Is the ACT writing test the only indication of writing capabilities in the application process?

Thanks for the help.

You should be fine. I got a 33 and a 7 on my writing (which also doesn’t reflect my capabilities either) and I was accepted at Madison within 3 weeks of applying. One of my friends got a 30 (I’m not sure about writing though), with like a 3.7 unweighted GPA and a lazily done application and was deferred and then accepted at Madison. If your GPA is higher than his, you should be in easily. I think the essays are used more for determining writing and creativity skills than the ACT writing.

That makes me feel better…lol. My GPA is 3.96 (A- bring GPA down) as of 1st semester of my junior year. Thanks for the reply.
