I got a 33 composite on the ACT, but I'm wondering if I should take it again.
Breakdown: 35 English, 33 Math, 31 Reading, 31 Science

I was very surprised when I saw my English score because I do not normally do that well on that section. I was wondering if I should retake it to bring up my Math and Science scores. I know that I can, but I would not be expecting a higher composite. Would it be worth retaking just to bring up sections? Do colleges look at particular sections or just the composite?

Given that you just barely got a 33 composite (with an actual 32.5) and that you say you did unexpectedly well in your best subject, the odds are slim that you would raise your composite score during a re-take, at least not without intensive additional preparation.

Also, not many colleges superscore the ACT, so improving individual sections is not likely to be of much help.

I know it was barely a 33. But I’ll take what I can get!

You guys helped me decide not to retake it. I am pretty confident with my score anyway. Do big schools look at English/Writing score heavily? I did surprisingly well on English and surprisingly bad on the essay with an 8, so my English/Writing dropped to a 31!!! Will that affect me?

I don’t know if big schools look at, but schools in the big ten (ex. Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois) simply look that you took the writing because you are able to take your highest composite and highest writing (even though you didn’t take writing on your highest composite). Don’t worry about writing. If you want to retake it once more, go for it! Unless your going to any ivy league school, you are able to mix around!

So you are saying the fact that I even took the Writing will benefit my chances? And by Big Ten would you be including Northwestern in saying that? :)
