So I took both the June ACT and SAT and feel really good with the scores I got on both of them. My SAT was much higher than I expected, and my ACT was at the upper range of what I was hoping for. However, I'm not sure if I should try and boost my scores a little bit by retaking the tests and risk getting lower scores. My breakdowns for SAT were: CR: 700, M: 760, and WR: 630 w/ an 8 essay. My ACT breakdown is: C: 33, E: 32, M: 32, R: 30, S: 36, E/WR: 30 w/ a 9 essay. I feel I can get my SAT writing up, and possibly my reading by 20 points or so. I could also potentially increase my ACT math, reading, and English by a point or two and get my comp up to a 34. So, my question: is it even worth it to retake these tests to try and raise the scores by a little and risk having some of my other section scores drop?

I figure it's helpful to know some of the schools I'm interested in as well to get a better idea of the score range I would like to be in. Some schools I'm looking at are Stanford, Yale, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, UPenn, and Pomona.

Answer: Yes.

My original SAT scores before I retook them were 700M, 750CR, and 640W. I retook them, earning a 710M, 740CR, and 760W. I was accepted to Yale, and I know they superscore, so even though my CR went down a few points, they still appreciated the jump in Writing.

As to the ACT question, I never took the ACTs, and I’m not as sure of how they work. But hopefully the SAT advice holds true for you! Best of luck!

Well, in my opinion, it depends on whether you believe you can score significantly higher on the writing. There seems to be a discrepancy between your SAT writing subscore and your ACT English score, even the corrected score with essay. I would be interested in knowing if something happened during the test that day that made your writing score a lot lower than you expected or if it is just a natural discrepancy. With the former, you probably should take it again, since you can be sure to raise the writing score. However, if it is the latter, depending on what stage in the application process you’re in, it may be difficult to raise that writing score.

However, it seems to me that the problem is the former, as your English score on the ACT is commendable.

Your ACT score is slightly better. However, most school would superscore SAT but not ACT. So retaking SAT would most likely bring up your superscore. I would suggest to do a few more practice tests on each to see which one you can really improve more.

I feel as if I could have definitely scored higher on the SAT writing section, although when it comes to SAT vs. ACT I definitely feel more confident with the ACT. My scores never really fluctuated on the ACT (taking 2 practice tests beforehand and scoring 32 on each) but I increased my SAT’s significantly. I had only scored a 189 on the PSAT I took last year. I’m mostly curious if schools would even consider my SAT score instead of my ACT, unless they only look at math and reading, in which case my 1460 would be very competitive. In case you aren’t familiar with ACT vs. SAT scoring, a 33 is seen as being similar to a 2200.

However, should I decide to give the tests another shot, how did you go about raising your SAT writing score, madi?
