How can I improve my speed? What methods you use?

Read fast.

yeah u need to read fast
use the same techniques everyone has posted for the SAT's reading

Read the economist. That helped me out a lot. It taught me to read fast, and at the same time there is a new issue about every week, so you should have plenty to read. Most issues are just south of 100 pages, with few ads, and small print, so you'll have quite a bit to read ;)

I took the test the first time without any prepation and got a 29. Before my second testing, I bought a review book (barrons) and timed myself on each section. For the sections I knew I would have timing issues with (science and reading), I took 5 minutes off the total time and forced myself to do each section in a shorter amount of time. This allowed me to become quick on the science and reading sections. I got a 36 on science and a 33 on reading. I think its all about timing. Pratice, pratice, pratice GOOD LUCK!!

The science would be easy if time were unlimited; the reading would be about the same, fairly hard.

I practiced time on the science and not to take so much time checking. It helped tremendously

On the science sections I would say to skip most of the explanation, etc. and go straight to the problem. Then look at the info and figure out what is what. The data charts and graphs are usually pretty self-explanatory. But skip all the unecessary stuff they throw in the science section. I did this on most of the science part because it was the last section and I was running out of time and I got a 35. (composite and science)

to add to my post- it was helpful on some to go back and skim the paragraphs for names, important facts, but I never spent time actually reading them.

Princeton Review has a good strategy for the reading. It raised my reading score from a 29 to a 32. As for science, not sure what to say... I got a 36 the first time w/o prep (and then a 35 the second time... go figure)

Does anybody have copies of past ACT tests that they want to sell me ? Please send me a private message. Thanks.

For the science section, I've said this before: don't freak out. Seriously, I'd never taken it, and when I turned to the first page of science I almost died. Then I took a deep breath, realized that there was a lot of scary-looking stuff but that the actual science was very simple, and got a 36. So yeh, be used to reading pretty fast and don't let the pressure get to you.

great book

1st time science: 27
2nd time with preparation: 35

Before the test: I practiced maybe 5-7 times, each time skimming my time, getting accustomed to the questions.

During the test: Just pace yourself. Keep your cool. Keep an eye on the clock.

Chicagonobel,
How did you practice those 5-7 times ? Did you practice taking real ACT tests OR from PR or other books ? Thanks.

Thanks a lot everybody !!! Great tips !!!
