ACT Science Help!

Hi everyone,

I am having trouble with the science sections of ACT since I run out of time. I always seem to mess up the last 3-4 questions, which hurts my score a lot (since each question is about a point). I also know that the science section will be my second best score if I can fix this issue. This is all based off the practice tests, since I never took the actual test yet.

What do you suggest?

If it’s a time issue and not a content issue, then you need to find strategies that work for you. I.e.: don’t read the passage in its entirety, and then move on to the questions, and then reread a couple paragraphs, etc. Just skim the bulky, fact-heavy articles. Read the first and last sentences and underline them, so you know what each paragraph is about, roughly. The statistics are a waste of time to read the first time around. After that, look at each question, and then read the paragraph that the question pertains to. Pick the answer that specifically has evidence in the passage, not just one that sounds “right” to you (Most of the time, each question has 2 answers that sound like they could be right. Only one is backed up by evidence.)

Take timed minisections. Time yourself for the practice tests if you aren’t doing that–don’t just “do” the tests. Do them in the same environment that you would the actual test: early in the morning, strictly timed.

Agree with above. Also don’t get hung-up on the charts, it can be confusing at times. Look for the specifics based on the question. Think of it as similar to the reading passages where you know the answers are contained in the reading (or charts).
