Hi! I've been really confused with the ACT Science section. The June 2014 test will be my second to last and also my 9th ACT test, and yes, I do mean my 9th. My scores have been steadily raising since I began taking the test my freshman year. Having just finished my junior year, this test is crucial for my college application process beginning in the fall. My problem, however, is the large inconsistency in my science scores. Simply being my most recent example; I took the national ACT in April and scored a 22 in Science, however 2 weeks later through state mandated testing, I scored a 33. This is not the first time it has happened. Does anyone have any advise to try and keep my score closer to the 33 rather than the 22? Thank You!!

Are you aware with the 5-6-7 strategy? First, answer the passages with 5 questions (easiest) and then the passages with 6 questions. It’s important that you just go straight to the questions for the 5 question passages. The 6 question passages are similar to the 5 question passages except for a couple questions that might require you to read the introduction. For the 7 question passage, it’s just straight reading. Personally, I treat it like one of the compare/contrast reading passages found in SAT Critical Reading. First, answer the questions related to the first viewpoint. Then, answer the questions related to the second viewpoint. Answering both viewpoints separately should help you understand the passage itself more clearly for you to answer the questions regarding both viewpoints.

Also, I’d like to note that using the 5-6-7 strategy allows me to pick up momentum efficiently. By that, I mean I treat the 5 passages as “warm ups” to the science section before tackling the meat of the section with the 6 and 7 question passages.

Thank You!

Coping with the science jargon and strict time schedule are the most difficult obstacles, that’s really the only thing that can decipher the ACT science from the ACT reading.
