Hi,
I am planning on taking the ACT exam this September but my science score is not improving.
I have been consistently getting a 25 on the science section (taken multiple practice exams already).
All my other sections are above 30 so I would like my science score to at least be a 30.
Have you guys ever experienced this? If so, how did you improve?
What strategies and books did you use to bump up the science score (I have the Red Book and Barron’s 36)?
Thanks!
With science, repeated drills have worked best for me. Try taking a practice ACT by taking four sciences back to back. If this sounds daunting, it is probably because endurance is an issue. If you do this enough times, your score will come up.
Also, DO NOT read the passage beforehand, unless it is the “Scientist 1, Scientist 2” type. The majority of the questions will ask about specific figures or data --always do those first. After completing those, you will have a pretty good idea of the experiments and can then answer the general questions without ever reading the entire passage! As you’ve probably figured out, the science section is just a convoluted reading section.
Let me know if this works for you :).
Focus this week on science as suggested above.
^^Excellent tips above.
I second the idea that the science section is actually more about critical reading - for some reason my son scores very high in that section with very little prep compared to the other sections. He said that it’s not actually about substantive knowledge - it’s more the ability to read the graphs and apply the data (?).
You should probably focus on strategies at this point, and then continue the practice practice practice.
