Son is a Junior, planning on applying to U of Mich next year. He is in-state, has a UM gpa of 4.0, good EC's, etc. He takes the ACT next month. The advice we got from the GC was "take the ACT until you are satisfied with your score". Any suggestions what score he needs to be "satisfied" with? In other words, at what point does he quit re-taking it?

honestly, if the kid has a 4.0 UM GPA, he's got a bit of leeway on his score. He "needs" to be satisfied with whatever he feels is his best score. If he takes it and gets a 28 and feels that was his best, than leave it there. If he takes it and gets a 35, but swears he can get a 36, than take it again...all power to him. Personal satisfaction won't come from an ACT score.

if he's shooting for honors program, then at least a 33. otherwise, a 30 is probably a good score to shoot for.

sigh..you missed my bigger point, which was that personal satisfaction shouldn't be represented by a test score....but w/e.

IcecleRose 88,
I am curious about your statement that the Honors Program will require "at least a 33 ACT." I am first in my class of 177 with a 4.0 unweighted GPA, but I only have a 32 ACT. I guess my ACT is the reason I didn't get an automatic invite. So, I am going through the essay process in an attempt to get into the Honors Program. I believe my essay was fairly good, but now I'm concerned I may be holding out a false hope of getting into the Honors Program. In short, can you tell me where you came up with the 33 ACT cut-off? Thanks!

There is no 33 cutoff. I've met people with 31's here in the honors program (not URM's or anything either).

No, there's not a 33 cutoff. But if you're aiming for Honors, that's probably a "safe" score to shoot for. That's all.

Thanks for all your help. Husband and I talked it over, and decided if Son can get a 30, he can quit taking the test. (He has no desire to be in the Honor's program.) (He also has no desire to take this test, which is the reason we needed a "goal".)

30 is a fine goal to have.
