Hi, BC is one of my top choices and I am taking the ACT in June and plan to send the score i receive to colleges next year. What ACT score do you think will be ideal for me to get/ make me a very competitive applicant? I know this is just one aspect. [For CSOM if that matters…]

It all depends on the rest of your application. Every year scores become less and less important, not to say that they are still not seriously considered. A score alone is not enough to determine whether you are a competitive applicant.

Regardless, CSOM usually sees a 30-33 middle 50% range.

31-33 would be ideal, the middle 50% for BC applicants is between 28 and 32. Good luck to you as you apply to BC. :)

Yes, the middle 50% for all of BC was between at 28-32, however CSOM is far more competitive and the range for that particular school is higher, and listed at a 30-33. Either way, a score is just one aspect, so it won’t make or break an applicant unless there is something seriously wrong with it.

mooseman, I’m curious as to the source of your statistics, because I’ve never seen anything from BC regarding the individual schools, just the freshman class overall. Where can I find such data?

For the class of 2012, the mid-50% of ACT scores for admitted students was 30 -33:
[Selecting the Class - Boston College](http://www.bc.edu/admission/undergrad/process/selecting.html)

Oh God worried_mom, you had to ask. I don’t remember where I saw it but I remember reading about the heightened admission standards for CSOM. It was some Princeton Review type website, but I can’t remember which one, and I don’t really have the motivation to search for it. It might have even been the Businessweek management school ranking profiles. I just don’t remember.

Regardless, CSOM is indeed slightly harder to get into, although not overwhelmingly. I don’t know if BC itself admits to that, but it seems to be the general consensus.

Sorry for the lack of hard information!

its from businessweek’s profile of CSOM

Sorry, I didn’t mean to put you on the spot, mooseman. It’s just that I have heard this “general consensus” that “You need higher stats to get into CSOM” many, many times on these boards but I have never been able to actually track down data comparing the various schools within BC. The BC Admissions Office claims they don’t keep such statistics by school – which I highly doubt – but in any event, they certainly are not published anywhere for general consumption.

I couldn’t find any specific references to the ACT range for CSOM on BusinessWeek.com, but if that’s the source you were using, then it’s almost certainly the range for the school overall and not just CSOM. And that seems to be confirmed by the fact that the range you cited (30-33) is indeed the exact same range that BC gives out for the school overall, as I noted.

I do think it’s probably harder to get into CSOM, but not necessarily due to higher standards – but just because more students are applying for a smaller number of slots so its acceptance rate is probably lower than the other schools. I just wondered if anyone had actual facts to prove it.
