ACT scores question

Hi guys I was wondering if you only have to send your best ACT scores to colleges or if you need to send all your scores. I plan on applying to the ivies so I was wondering what there policies were?

Depends on the school. Look it up on their individual websites or contact their offices and ask.

How would they know if you don’t send them your lower scores? That’s just wasting money. Just send your top score and you’ll be fine.

Yeah, what ^ said
Although, some high schools submit your ACT scores if you have sent them yours

I’m pretty sure that Yale just started a new policy in which all test scores must be sent to the school, so some of the other Ivies might do that as well. Also, another thing to look into would be SAT scores. Most of the Ivies require at least two SAT Subject Tests, and some (I think) even require you to submit an SAT score. Also, over 90% of applicants submit SAT scores to most the Ivies. You may not have to submit you’re ACT scores if you submit the SAT scores.

Well I took both the ACT and the SAT i got a 2100 the first time on the SAT and a 34 on the ACT and felt I could do better. I took the SAT again as well and am hoping for a 2300 this time. Which score would be better to send to a college such as Yale which is my first choice

All colleges on any ranking list take either SAT or ACT so there is no ivy that requires that you must submit the SAT. A number of colleges, including ivies, require SAT IIs. However, a number of those who require SAT IIs will take the ACT in lieu of both the SAT and SAT IIs – Yale, Brown, and Penn are the trhee ivies that do that.

As to submitting all scores. If applying this year for entry into fall 2009 freshman class, if you order College Board to send any SAT score, all are automatically sent (both SAT and SAT IIs). ACT sends only the score requested to be sent. No college this year requires that you submit all ACT scores that you have.

BUT if you are applying next fall for entry into 2010 freshman class, rules are changing and you will need to check with each college as to exactly what they will require. This all results from the College Board announcing that it will adopt “score choice” for SAT scores and thus you can choose not to send SAT or SAT II scores while sending others. A number of colleges have reacted wretchedly to this announcement by stating they will require students to submit all scores and some of those have said they will start requiring the student to send all ACT scores also. How many colleges will go to requiring all ACT scores is yet unknown as they all have until about August to make up their mind. How will they know you actually send all scores if they require all scores? Unknown. However, if they tell you to send all scores and you don’t and they find out even later, they can withdraw any acceptance, and even just kick you out middle of freshman year.

ACT is set up to be able to allow you to choose which score to send. SAT used to be able to do that when it wasnt computerized. At a point (I dont know which year) they computerized and their system did not allow for score choice. The reason they changed the system this Spring, is that they were loosing money to ACT, since all colleges now accept either one (not so as early as 10 years ago). It will cost you extra money in reporting, but you should not have the scores go to your school. This way you control the scores. If you only put yourself on the receiving end as you take the tests, then you have to pay for each score to be sent to colleges and to your school. IMO its worth the extra $9/14. Also, imo, colleges wont make you send all scores for act, because 1) each report costs 2) because of privacy issues, ACT at this juncture will not release all scores, thus you wont be caught – SAT just showed every single thing you signed up for, even if you cancelled it – their programming was very iron-age.
