I'm really confused about something here...
So I took the April ACT, and got a really bad score...very unexpected.... When I registered prior to that, I entered in the colleges of my choices, where my score will be sent. Are they sent already? People are telling me I get to choose my highest and show the colleges that particular score, but wouldn't they have seen my low one already? And do they take the highest scores for Act like they do for SAT?

If you filled out colleges to send to as part of your application, they are already sent. The ACT follows a rule that it sends only the test score you request to be sent even if it has multiple tests for you. However, when you designate on your app that the test score should be sent to certain colleges, that is a request to send those scores. Many, who want to wait to see what score they get, don't fill in that portion of the app and wait to send later (at an extra charge of $8 per college).

If you send scores from multiple ACT tests, colleges generally use the one with the highest composite to determine your score for admission purposes. Some will actually take your highest subscores from multiple tests to come up with a new composite for admission purposes.

Note, the fact that ACT sends only the test score requested does not necessarily mean that you will conceal other ACT test scores from a college. Many high schools put all your test scores on your official high school transcript that goes to colleges.

Yeah, they'd be sent already, but all they do is open a file for you when they get it. They don't do anything else with your info until you submit your app, and if you get a higher score on a retake, they'll consider the higher score and ignore the first one. Seriously, they get so busy with apps they don't have time to care if your first score sucked, they just care about the best one.

So don't sweat it. Just retake.
