Just wondering if anyone knows how the ACT is scored and whether the number of students who take a test on a specific date --such as today--influence the score. Does it help you out to take the test on a more heavily tested date or does it not matter?

It doesn’t matter. Like the SAT, the ACT is a standardized test and the makeup or quantity of the students taking the test does not affect your score one way or the other. Unless you don’t like crowds or are worried that there may be stealth zombie test takers. :)

^ Agreed.

Also, some people seem to think that the ACT is significantly harder on some test dates than others. My school’s guidance counselor told me that the October one is much harder than the April one. This, however, seems false. Even if one date had a more difficult test, the curve would be more generous, so it would cancel it out.
