ACT Sharing Registration Information

I signed-up for the April ACT several weeks ago. I opted not to report my scores to any colleges at this point because it is my first time taking it and felt like it would put less pressure on me. I will spend the extra money later to send my scores if I feel like they are acceptable.

OK -- my question is that within 24 hours of registering, I got several e-mails from a couple of colleges wishing me luck on the upcoming ACT and giving me their college codes so that I could have my scores sent to them. I was shocked. How did they know? Does the ACT sell information about who is taking the test even though they are not reporting scores to these schools?

I don't think I authorized them to sell or share my information. Did I do this unknowingly just by registering?

Any information would be helpful, I obviously don't know how all of this works.

Yes, by registering your info with CB or with ACT, they have the opportunity to send your information to colleges so they can market to you.

If you haven’t already, you’ll start getting a ton of junkmail from colleges as well. =)

I think there may be a little tiny box you can click to opt out, but you probably really have to look for it!

So, colleges will know how many times I took the ACT even if I don’t report my scores?

They really should be required to disclose this information in a more straightforward manner – I am sure they do what they are legally required to do, but I am fairly perceptive and still missed that.

I think I will go back to my ACT profile and see if I missed this somewhere and if I can change it.
