Hi,
I just got my act score back and got a 34 composite. The problem is that my section scores are 35english 30math 34reading 35science. Is it bad that my math score is so low?
No, you are just fine.
Unlike the SAT, the ACT is a more holistic test. Colleges don’t look at individual sections religiously.
Thanks!
A 34 is a terrific score, but the Math might only be worrisome if you are planning to apply to highly competitive STEM schools or programs. Have you taken any SAT II tests in Math or Science? Will you take, or have you taken, a Math IB or AP test? A 30 is nothing to be ashamed of, and is perfectly adequate for admission to most colleges. Where are you applying? If you feel it isn’t enough, you might want to take the SAT. If you have also done well in high-level Math classes, that should prove that you can handle advanced, quantitative material in college. Sometimes it doesn’t hurt to try the SAT. You have a great ACT composite score, and you can submit that with pride, but you might do better on the Math SAT. My son had similar composite scores, but performed better on the Math SAT, and in the English/Writing ACTs. Submitting both demonstrated strength. If your SAT isn’t as strong, you don’t have to submit it. I would also say that there is no need to take it if you are not applying to highly selective STEM or the most selective (ie. Wharton) Business programs.
