I am at a loss when it comes to applying to schools. My list right now includes University of Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, Lawrence University, Knox College, Notre Dame, St. Mary's in Indiana, Knox College, and Illinois Wesleyan University. I want to apply to Yale because I love the feel of the school and I would love to go to the school of sacred music for grad school (though I know undergrad is totally irrelevant in this case). However, I do love the school. But, I have been hearing conflicting messages from people. Is it necessary to submit both my ACT AND SAT scores, or could I just send my ACT (I think I'm correct in saying then subject tests are not necessary). I got a 34 on my ACT but only 2170 on the SAT, and my math score was only 690. Some people have told me that's fine; others have said I have no chance of getting in with a score under 700. Can someone help clarify this for me? Do I really need to submit both?

It's best to go to the source, from the Yale website:

Which standardized tests does Yale require?
Yale requires either the SAT I or the ACT. Students who submit scores for the SAT I are also required to take two of the SAT II Subject Tests. They may take any two subject tests of their choosing. The middle 50 percent of Yale's entering class this year had scores between 700 and 790 on both the verbal and the math sections of the SAT I.

No reason to submit both, period.

That's what I thought....so I would be better off with just my ACT, right?

IMO, yes, your ACT of 34 is excellent!

Is there something missing here? I was just told by somebody on another site I have no chance at Yale with a 34 and 4.0 gpa...is that at all right?

They are stupid. Or just playing up the stereotype that HYPSM accept practically no one.

if u dont need to submit SAT 2s, and u have a better ACT than SAT, always just submit ACT

Im pretty sure chicago doesnt require subject tests. That schools amazing. I spent three weeks in intensive japanese there this summer. Lots of work though...be ready.

either A, the person is a dumbass
Or B
They were kidding.
A 34 is a very strong score for every university in the world.
That being said, all i know is that u are competetive for any school academically speaking.
Your ECs will greatly determine acceptance to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and the like...basically you have to have ur grades, and be insanely good at something for a decent shot really.

gigidaisy, it is ridiculous to say you have "no chance" at Yale, or anywhere else, with an ACT score of 34. If you want to know what the score ranges of previously accepted students is, you can find that information in the Common Data Set of individual schools, or on the College Board site, or the US News and World Report college ranking site. I believe the latest Yale data indicate that 25% of a recently accepted class had SAT scores of 790 or above on both M and CR. A score of 34 correlates roughly to an SAT I score of 1510-1550, I think. Keep in mind that the SAT score is only one of many variables that will be considered by a school like Yale, and that your score of 34 falls well within the mid-50 percentile range.
